SPT has been a recognised leader in the field of marine transfer of oil and LNG, serving the energy sector for over 20 years. We have earned this position through a commitment to the highest levels of service, aligned to a drive to continually enhance our technical and market-based knowledge.
Based out of headquarters in Houston, USA, SPT is a jointly-owned company of I.M. Skaugen SE (50%) and Teekay Shipping Corporation (50%).
Our business is based on three primary activities:
- Marine transfer services and shipping
- Global lightering support services
- LNG terminal management
SPT is one of the largest companies in the world providing marine transfer of crude oil and LNG. Historically, our core competence has been crude oil and petroleum products lightering, predominantly in the Gulf of Mexico, though we have recently expanded our presence significantly around the world with new lightering services in Europe and West Africa. At the same time we have taken our considerable skills developed in the oil sector to commence liquefied natural gas (LNG) lightering services and we are now particularly active in this unique service in the US and in Europe.
In order to reduce risk and increase revenues for our fleet of eight Aframax tankers – six of which have been delivered to us since mid-2007 – we also use our vessels for intra- and inter-continental voyage business. This allows us to achieve the best return by switching utilisation between lightering and oil shipments to suit our needs and the demands of our customers. Our second major discipline is that of global support services. SPT provides a range of services – such as workboats, mooring masters and lightering equipment – to support the lightering operations of other companies. As well as the US, we have a particular focus in the Mediterranean and north-west Europe and we have bases in Rotterdam, Cyprus and Sunderland, UK.
The third leg of our activities covers the management of port operations at LNG receiving facilities around the world, particularly offshore deepwater ports and floating LNG terminals. As the importance of LNG services grows, we are leveraging our competence from crude oil transfer activities to develop a leading position in this specialised new area of marine transfer business. Our capability already extends to activities in South America, the UK and the Middle East.
We pride ourselves on meeting the challenge of producing world class performance for our customers – in both time and cost expectations. And we have a comprehensive health & safety programme to ensure that we are always striving to improve our excellent safety record. Our concern for the environment is also central to all of our operations. This is indicated by our lightering record over more than two decades, with less than 0.00002 per cent of oil lost to the environment. With a comprehensive lightering product portfolio, highly experienced staff and an outstanding Aframax fleet, we are well placed to consolidate our industryleading position as we near three decades of operational excellence.
